The Do’s and Don’ts when backpacking with kids

Now that you have decided to hit the road with your kids, you probably must be freaking about what all things to carry in your backpack. A lot of ideas and things must be swimming through your mind, but you can’t really seem to find the exact pieces that you will actually be needing. Should I carry a casual dress? Should I bring two bathing suits? It’s just a lot to take in, especially when you are traveling with your kids. Firstly, you don’t need to be stressed about anything, relax yourself and put your mind at ease.

Regardless of how many kids you are traveling with, there are a few do’s and don’ts of backpacking when the kids are involved. To help you simplify the packing part for your trip, we have laid a list of some do’s and don’ts that you should follow for packing smartly.

Do make sure that you pack light

Packing light should always be your number one priority because it’s you who will have to carry all the stuff on your back, and an average person can roughly handle 10%of their body weight on their back. The same goes for kids too. You should allow your kids to carry their own backpacks with their belongings, which fosters independence, responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment. For the most part, your kids might be able to carry their own backpack, but what will happen when they get tired, and you will have to carry their pack and sometimes your kids too more than occasionally? Every ounce counts when you back a bag, therefore keep it light for your own sake.

Don’t carry more than two of anything

Don’t let the fear of under packing overpower you. All those what if’s may lure you into packing a lot of unnecessary stuff but it’s you who has to resist the urge and control yourself from carrying those unwanted things that you won’t even be using. Any clothing piece that you have in your bag can be washed and dried in a day, therefore carrying more than two of anything is absolutely unnecessary. Keep your packing to minimal and streamlined, and you will have more fun and fulfilling adventure.

Do make sure to bring your kids favorite toys

Contrary to what most people believe, you should bring along some favorite toys of the kids in a backpack. Regardless of the duration of your trip, kids do crave a sense of normalcy. To make sure that they feel at home and their comfiest best, make sure to carry one or two of their favorite toys even if it means carrying extra ounces or worst pounds, but all in all, this will all be worth it.

Don’t bring too many toiletries

You should always avoid carrying unnecessary stuff in your backpack, which also includes too many toiletries. Shoes and toiletries are hands down the heaviest things you can carry in your backpack. You can find almost everything at all the places unless you have a prescribed item, or it’s something that is hard to find. In that case, you can either leave it at home or bring just a tiny bit of it to give yourself a few days to find it locally.

Do bring a medical kit

A medical kit is one of the most important things to carry in your backpack. It doesn’t have to contain a lot of items, but you can include certain things that are hard to find when you actually need it. Some items like bandages, a topical antibiotic, antihistamines, self-adhesive bandage, liquid stitches, etc. should be included in your medical kit. These are the basics and bare minimum, but you can carefully consider what you would require in different situations. Hence, plan things accordingly.
